Overview
What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?
A Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist is someone who has completed additional training in this specialised area and has a passion for helping women manage pelvic pain, incontinence, and pelvic floor dysfunction. At PEAK, our Physiotherapists provide expert care in Women’s Health Physiotherapy.
What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Used For?
Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy encompasses a range of treatment options to address various pelvic health conditions. These may include pelvic pain during pregnancy, urinary or fecal incontinence, and sexual dysfunction. During your assessment, your Physiotherapist will discuss your symptoms and concerns, assess your movement and strength, and create a customised treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.
Pelvic Pain In Pregnancy
A Women’s Health Physiotherapist can work with you during pregnancy and beyond to help manage any pelvic pain you may experience. A condition that is common during pregnancy is pelvic girdle pain which can also be known as symphysis pubis dysfunction. Pelvic girdle pain is a collective term for pain that you may experience in your pelvis and lower back and can radiate into your bottocks, hip, thighs and perineum. Your PEAK Women’s Health Physiotherapist can assess your symptoms, educate you on how best to manage them and provide you with exercises to help strengthen and support yourself throughout your pregnancy.
Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is a condition that affects 1 in 3 women regardless of whether they have or have not been pregnant. Whilst it is common, it is not something that is not accepted to be normal. There are 2 main forms of incontinence, stress urinary incontinence and urge urinary incontinence. Your PEAK Women’s Health Physiotherapist can help you determine what type of incontinence you have, what causes your symptoms and provide you with pelvic floor physiotherapy exercises to work to strengthen and empower you.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
The pelvic floor, like any muscle group, can become weak or tight. Imbalances in the pelvic floor muscles can lead to pelvic pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, and sexual discomfort. Your Physiotherapist will work with you to manage your symptoms and restore optimal function.

Wear something comfortable. Depending on your appointment, if you’ll be doing exercises with your Physiotherapist, you may wish to wear activewear. For a Women’s Health assessment, you can attend in your normal clothes.
While unfortunately leaking with sneezing or running is common for women (especially postnatally), it isn’t something that has to be accepted as normal. Urinary incontinence can have good outcomes with strengthening the pelvic floor and learning how to manage the symptoms.
An assessment will include a thorough history and subjective evaluation, followed by a functional assessment. This may involve an internal exam by a Women’s Health Physiotherapist to test the muscle function of your pelvic floor and guide appropriate exercise prescription. Based on the findings, you’ll receive personalised advice and education to help you understand and manage your symptoms. Your Physiotherapist may also develop an exercise plan and recommend supportive strategies or devices if needed.
