Ardyn’s journey in BJJ began at the age of 32, a time when many might consider taking a step back from sports. Prior to this he had won several 100m and 200m events in Brisbane and Gold Coast meets through his early to mid twenties. He had since taken a step back from his athletic pursuits to start a family however his competitive spirit was still very much alive. Upon the suggestion of our massage therapist, Josh, Ardyn decided to give BJJ a try. However, going from a high level of one pursuit, to being a complete beginner in another is no easy transition.

His early encounters with the mat weren’t without difficulty; he faced defeat in every match of his first competition. Yet, rather than letting these losses deter him, Ardyn used them as stepping stones towards growth. He embraced the grind, took what learnings he could from these defeats and continued training, often sacrificing sleep in order to make it in for the 6am classes.

The turning point arrived at the Queensland State Championships. Ardyn’s hard work and resilience began paying off as he secured victory in two out of his next three matches, showcasing his evolving proficiency in the art of BJJ. This taste of progress only fuelled his determination further. At the Brisbane Open, he demonstrated his improvements by finishing third among 16 competitors, marking his first submission finish in competition.

On the 30th of July, a date etched in his journey, he emerged as the ultimate victor at the South Pacific Championships. Displaying unmatched dedication, finishing each of his opponents through submission. Ardyn’s hard-won gold medal was not just a symbol of his victory in the competition; it symbolized his refusal to succumb to setbacks, and his unshakeable spirit.

Ardyn Foy’s story resonates far beyond the realms of sports. It stands as a reminder that age is no barrier to pursuing one’s passion and that setbacks are but opportunities to come back stronger. His journey is an embodiment of discipline, resilience, and the unwavering belief that through consistent effort, success can be achieved, no matter how unconventional the path.

Ardyn’s victory serves as a beacon of inspiration, motivating us to face challenges head-on and pursue our dreams with unyielding determination. It reminds us that the journey of triumph is often paved with setbacks, but those who persist and persevere are the ones who taste the sweetest victories. Dream Big mate! We’ll see you earning that blue belt in no time!
