Pre-Event

Pre-event sports massage can be done anywhere between a few days and 4 hours before a sporting event. Some athletes incorporate massage into their warm up regimes as a way to relax, stimulate the muscles and improve mindset. In addition to these effects, sports massage can be beneficial during an event. Usually used within play stoppage or half time it can assist an athlete exercise or perform more efficiently, aid with cramps or symptoms of lactic acid build up and further prevent delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMs).

Post-Event

Post-event sports massage is when you’ll find your body in dire need of some recovery! This treatment can be used anywhere between 1-2 hrs post event or a few days. Sports massage after an event can aid with the DOMs that have already settled in by increasing the circulation within the muscles. Sports massage is highly recommended for all things recovery, second to a consistent good nights sleep.

Rehabilitative

Rehabilitative sports massage can be used to assist with the healing process during all stages of an injury. Sports massage is often safe after an injury, however consulting with your physiotherapist first is recommended. Often throughout the stages of injury rehab we accumulate muscle tension as load increases, this style of massage helps alleviate muscle pain, maintain strength gains and reduce the risk of repeated injury.

Sports massage does not have a specific technique. The treatment depends on the therapist and their training or experience as well as the nature of the complaint. Here at PEAK you can expect the treatment to be tailored to you specifically. Some techniques you can expect incorporated into your treatment plan are as follows:

  • soft tissue release: Pinning and stretching of the tissues and muscles

  • neuromuscular technique: targeting trigger points in the nervous system to get rid of pain and tension. Commonly known as trigger pointing

  • positional release: Moving the muscle through its range whilst applying massage. Used to relax hyperactive muscles.

fascial release: deep, slow kneading used to release the connective tissues around the muscles
