Tension Headaches
Tension headaches are among the most prevalent types of headaches and are often described as a steady, dull pressure or tightness around the head. They typically result from muscle tension in the neck and scalp, often triggered by stress, poor posture, or eye strain. The pain is usually mild to moderate and can last from a few hours to several days.
Migraine Headaches
Migraines are more severe and complex than tension headaches. They often present as intense, throbbing pain on one side of the head, accompanied by symptoms like sensitivity to light, sound, and even certain smells. Nausea and vomiting can also be associated with migraines. They are believed to involve changes in blood flow to the brain and are often triggered by factors like hormonal fluctuations, certain foods, lack of sleep, and stress.
Cluster Headaches
Cluster headaches are relatively rare but extremely intense. They occur in clusters or groups, often striking one side of the head and causing excruciating, stabbing pain around the eye. These headaches are characterised by their cyclic nature, with multiple attacks occurring over weeks or months, followed by periods of remission. The exact cause of cluster headaches isn't well understood, but they are considered one of the most painful types of headaches.
Sinus Headaches
Sinus headaches often cause pain and pressure in the forehead, cheeks, and around the eyes. They are commonly associated with sinus infections or allergies, which cause inflammation and blockages in the sinus passages. Alongside the pain, sinus headaches can also lead to nasal congestion. Treating the underlying cause, such as managing allergies or infections, usually alleviates sinus headaches. Over-the-counter decongestants and pain relievers can provide temporary relief.
Thunderclap Headaches
Thunderclap headaches live up to their name, striking suddenly like a clap of thunder. The pain of these severe headaches peaks within 60 seconds. Thunderclap headaches are uncommon, but they can warn of potentially life-threatening conditions.
Vestibular Migraine
With a vestibular migraine, the person may experience a combination of vestibular attacks, visual aura, or sensitivity to visual stimulation and motion at different times, and they can occur with or without an actual headache.
