Kai has been a PEAK athlete since 2019 when first coming in for neck pain at the age of 16. When he came to PEAK, he was well and truly already on the journey to be an elite level swimmer—swimming since he was a little boy and already holding a lot of age-level records for state and school.

Pain, Prevention and Performance or PPP, is a continuum we speak of at PEAK that classifies an athlete’s mindset. Most athletes are stuck in a pain mindset where they follow a repetitive journey of falling in and out of pain. The Prevention mindset is where athletes then realise it is more beneficial to be doing things for their health in the absence of pain to lower their risk of falling back into pain. The Performance mindset is one step further where to achieve something quite significant, significant sacrifice is required, like training for an event. Kai from day one at PEAK has shown the Performance mindset toward his dream of achieving an Experience Never Felt Possible.

Kai’s “Experience Never Felt Possible” is to represent Australia at the Olympics! He understands that this will not come easy, in fact Kai has had to sacrifice a lot on his pursuit towards this dream. When speaking to Kai he explained that often he would sacrifice going to social events so he could train at his peak to gain an edge on his competitors. Kai also chose to change schools to a highly recognised swimming school to allow for greater coaching opportunities to move him closer to his dream.

Perhaps the biggest challenge on Kai’s journey so far would have to be having to maintain the sacrifices and level of training through the ever-challenging time of the covid-19 pandemic. Kai qualified for several overseas events in 2020/21 including a trip to Hawaii for the 2020 Age National Championships, which he had to miss due to overseas border restrictions.

At the 2021 Australian National Swimming Championships Kai proved once again why he deserves the prevention space at New Farm named after him, by winning gold in the 100m Freestyle for his age! In 2021 he also received his first Green and Gold tracksuit to represent Australia at the world juniors championships.

In Early 2022 Kai raced for the first time against the open age males at the 2022 Nationals, smashing his PB with a time of 49.14 in the 100m Free final. That time meant Kai only just missed out on a Commonwealth Games spot, but it had him selected to swim for the Australia-A team at the 2022 US National Championships that occurred in July! Kai put up a time in his 200m Freestyle at the US nationals in Irvine, California that actually would have placed him 5th in the 2022 Commonwealth Games final!

These milestones are just stepping stones toward Kai’s Dream Big goal, and at PEAK we are backing him 100%. His dedication and passion for what he does is exactly why his name is in big letters above the New Farm Prevention space!
