At PEAK we believe there are 3 main principles to take into account when it comes to setting you up for success.

Being aware of how we move is very important. Having the proper technique with any physical activity is a great way to ensure that we are moving in a safe, healthy and efficient way. This might look like analysing your feet as they hit the ground during running or it could be measuring how straight your back is during a squat. Optimising our movement helps ensure that all of our muscles are doing the jobs they are designed for, resulting in us moving in the safest and most efficient way!

Our bodies are great at so many things. We all however, have weaknesses too. These often vary from person to person. Maybe a new found runner has great core and upper body strength from all the gym they have been doing prior. Their hip stabilising muscles however might not be up to scratch, leaving weak muscles with a large job description to fill out, resulting in a muscle strain. Understanding the new sport/activity you are starting and examining its demands against your strengths and weaknesses, is a great way to ensure that you start off on the front foot!

All too often can we get carried away with our new found exercise love. Motivation levels are high and we’re seeing some rapid progress and results. Diving in head first is often the quickest way to overload our bodies and trigger an injury. Starting off at an easy pace might look like running a bit slower initially or going to gym class a few days a week, rather than twice a day everyday. Building a steady crescendo of load is the safest way to ensure that your body has adequate time to adjust and adapt to all the new forces and stimulus that it’s now able to grow with. Use the extra time you have at the start of your journey to focus on the first two points as well!

Nothing can put a speed bump in the road of our goals quite like an injury can. That’s why at PEAK we believe that prevention is the best course of action!
