Matts started his journey with taking a few key ideas on board about his pain and his back. The first being that pain does not accurately reflect “damage” in the back, especially when it becomes chronic (lasts >6 months). Pain is like an alarm signal the brain switches on when it perceives damage, and in chronic pain cases the brain becomes efficient at turning on the alarm signal.  The second idea was that the back is actually a really strong and stable structure. The third idea was that to snap out of the cycle of pain, Matt had to gradually expose himself to more load, instead of protecting his back.

As soon as Matt’s pain had settled down, he began weight training once a week in prevention classes, and twice at home. Matt began with practicing the deadlift movement with a dowel, then quickly progressed to a 20kg bar. Now 20 weeks later Matt has hit a new personal best with his deadlift at 90kg 5reps for 5 sets!

The biggest gain for Matt has been the confirmation that his back is strong, and that he is able to lift and carry things without getting “injured”. Not only has Matt been pain free over the last 5 months but he has been able to push himself with his hobby of mountain biking without any limitations. Matt cycles and mountain bikes 20-50 km a week on average. He recently cycled 340km on his mountain bike over 2 days! Although he got chased by a bull, fell off once, and felt battered by the end, his back felt great!

Matt’s ability to challenge his previous beliefs about his back, and commit to months of consistent hard work, whilst also enjoying the process is incredibly inspiring to witness. Sticking to a plan with slow yielding results, in an effort to resolve pain that one’s had for years takes a lot of trust, and determination. I hope that there are many more deadlift personal bests and insane solo mountain bike trips to come!
