Physiotherapy for neck pain
Physiotherapy is an effective treatment for acute episodes of neck pain as well as traumatic neck injuries such as whiplash. Neck pain is a multifactorial condition and needs a thorough management plan to get the best outcomes and allow you to return to normal as soon as you can. Once a plan is developed your physiotherapist will be able to help you improve range of movement then build up strength to return to your normal activities.
Whiplash associated disorder
Physiotherapy is a necessary part of rehabilitation from whiplash associated disorder. This is due to the complex nature of this injury and the bodies inability to effectively fix this issue with rest. Physiotherapy at PEAK will help you decrease sensitivity of the muscles through your neck and shoulders as well as improve the coordination of movement of your neck. With improvement in neck movement coordination you will then start to feel a reduction in the tightness and pain through your neck.
Cervical disc injuries
A cervical disc injury is an injury to the discs that are between the vertebrae in your neck. These structures are strong but are not rigid which allows for neck movement. These injuries can happen for many different reasons and can sometimes result in irritation of the nerves that exit the spine. This can cause pain down your arm and occasional pins and needles. Physiotherapy is an effective treatment for this condition and will work to decrease pain and allow for healing of the disc injury. Physiotherapy may also be necessary to desensitise the nervous system that can be affected from the disc injury.
Physiotherapy for shoulder pain
Rotator cuff injuries
Rotator cuff injuries are a common presentation that require physiotherapy treatment. Current evidence suggests that physiotherapy led care is the best first treatment for these injuries. The rotator cuff muscles are muscles that help stabilise the shoulder joint as well as rotate the arm. People will present with increased shoulder pain with movement and occasional pain at night. Physiotherapy will help decrease pain in the initial stages of the injury with a variety of hands on techniques and exercises. The physiotherapist will then progress the athlete’s strength which helps improve healing of the tendon and allows the athlete to return to their pre-injury level of function of their shoulder joint.
Instability issues
Instability of the shoulder occurs through both traumatic and atraumatic incidences. Traumatic shoulder injuries can cause instability due to injury of structural components of the shoulder joint, in particular the labrum. Atraumatic shoulder instability is usually due to genetic abnormality in which the ligaments and labrum allow for greater movement of the shoulder joint occasionally causing pain. Physiotherapy is an effective treatment for both these injuries working on muscle strength and control to help support the shoulder joint. This will help decrease pain and increase stability of the joint to prevent dislocation and subluxation of the shoulder joint.
Physiotherapy for neck referred shoulder pain & shoulder referred neck pain
It is also not unusual for the neck and shoulder to refer to the opposing area. A number of spinal levels at the neck refer to areas around the shoulder and can cause pain if these levels are irritated. Shoulder pain can also cause neck discomfort or pain due to the numerous muscles that connect between these areas. Your physiotherapist can help determine whether either of these presentations apply to you by taking you through a thorough neck and shoulder assessment.
Physiotherapy is able to provide effective management for many shoulder and neck injuries. By seeing a physiotherapist at PEAK you will be seeing someone who is experienced in managing these conditions and you will be getting the best evidence based treatment for the condition you are experiencing.
