It is often difficult to gauge how long it will take for pain to resolve due to the numerous contributing factors which cause it to develop. Most people respond well to a period of relative rest combined with muscle strength and flexibility exercises, progressing into more complex and higher loading exercise. Research into this area indicates physiotherapy-supervised rehabilitation programs from 8-12 weeks in length.

At Peak, we use a range of different hands-on treatment and management tools including:

  • Massage and soft tissue treatment for tightened hip and leg structures
  • Dry needling
  • Electrical muscle stimulation to promote muscle activation and strength
  • Joint mobilisations
  • Running and gait analysis
  • Footwear advice
  • Taping the kneecap to improve alignment
  • Foot orthotics may be required to correct running and/or walking gait

EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION!

If you are experiencing pain around the kneecap affecting your running or exercise, then you should request an appointment with either our physiotherapists or podiatrist for a comprehensive assessment to determine the causes of this pain. Stretching is a good starting point but a progressive strengthening program focusing on the issues which have caused this tightness and pain to develop is required.
