Vertigo is most commonly caused by problems to the Vestibular System located within the Inner Ear. It is most prominent in the older population 50 years and above but can affect all ages. This article will discuss the common causes of Vertigo and how our Physiotherapy and Chiropractic team at PEAK can treat and resolve these issues.

The most common causes of Vertigo are linked to problems within the inner ear. This is where our body’s movements are transformed into signals which our brain interprets and reacts to, keeping us balanced and stable. Disruption to this process can cause you to feel like yourself or the room is spinning, you may feel nauseous and sweaty or unsteady on your feet.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo, closely followed by Meniere’s Disease and Vestibular Neuritis or Labrynthitis.  BPPV occurs when small calcium crystals become lodged in the semicircular canals in the inner ear. These crystals alter the signals being sent to the brain, leading us to interpret them commonly as “the room is spinning”, nausea and unsteadiness on our feet.

Meniere’s Disease is another dysfunction in the inner ear that is also related to tinnitus and hearing loss. Athletes may also experience vertigo if they suffer from a Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis which is due to an infection of the nerve or labyrinth located in the inner ear.

At PEAK our Physiotherapists and Chiropractors can assess these conditions using a range of eye tests, positional movements and balance tests to find the cause of your issue. By using techniques such canal repositioning maneuvers, vestibular rehabilitation and balance training we can effectively work towards a positive outcome for your symptoms.

Every athlete’s presentation is different and diagnosis should be conducted by a health practitioner who can do a full physical assessment and consider all activity factors in relation to your symptoms. For a tailored approach contact us at PEAK for a full athlete-centred assessment and plan to help you achieve your goals and Dream Big.
