At the end of 2019, Visaya relocated to New York City to take on the next challenge in a promising art career. However, on the way home from a designer shoe launch on January 11th, Visaya fell onto the train tracks in New York’s subway, and was tragically struck by 2 trains in 17 minutes. Emergency services deemed her survival nothing short of a miracle.
She awoke in a COVID-rampant Bellevue Hospital ward with a displaced C2 vertebrae fracture, fractured skull, sheared carotid artery and mangled lower limbs. Once her condition stabilized, the difficult decision was reached to perform bilateral amputations from below her right knee and left ankle. After an added battle with Covid-19, Visaya was discharged from Bellevue and returned to Australia on April 11th, 2020.
Her rehab journey continued at the PA hospital before attending PEAK in June, 2020. She commenced twice/weekly 1:1 exercise sessions with Physio Coaches Tommy, Greg and Brittney and gradually transitioned from a wheelchair to crutches to a walking stick, and was walking independently by October, 2020. As she regained her strength, she resumed work at the Gallery of Modern Art, joined Crossfit Crossaxed and picked her art career back up right where she left off.
In May of 2021, Visaya ticked off her Dream Big goal of having her own contemporary art exhibition. The ‘Hot n Heinous’ exhibition, hosted on James Street, received coverage from Channel 7 and was a resounding success – selling out within a week. Visaya has since won another Australian art competition, and hopes to return to the US in the near future to pursue her next goal of having an exhibit in the US!
We believe in the power of stories, and hope that Visaya’s perseverance, optimism and courage can inspire others to take the next step in their journey towards an experience not felt possible. As such, Visaya’s name sits atop one of our treatment rooms at the Hawthorne arena.
