Read moreBefore starting as an All Star, Jaime had already discovered PEAK as an athlete when she was experiencing foot pain while preparing for Brisbane Half Marathon in early 2024. Fast forward to the end of 2024 where Jaime then started as an All Star at PEAK. At the same time she was battling knee pain when running. This resulted in her seeking out treatment from one of our physio’s, Lelia who sparked the conversation of whether Jaime had any goals with her running. Running a marathon was something Jaime thought would be cool to one day complete but it was this conversation that triggered her to dream big and sign up to Sunshine Coast marathon with the PEAK team the following year.

With Lelia’s help Jaime was able to get on top of her knee pain and start to increase her running loads. From there Jaime had the guidance of one of our other physio coaches, Lleyton who helped construct a strength and conditioning, and running program in which they regularly touched base to check in with and adjust where needed. Jaime attributes this to be the most important part to her prep in setting her up for success for the marathon.
Jaime found sessions where she was training alone and days she was lower on energy the most challenging to stay motivated during her prep. What kept Jaime going through these times was the feeling of accomplishment when completing her long runs and realising what her body was actually capable of doing. She found this feeling pretty amazing and definitely gave that runner’s high!
As with most marathon preps some niggly injuries can be common to pop up and Jaime was not one to avoid this. On top of the knee pain previously mentioned Jaime also experienced some issues with her hip after tackling some tough hills during the Toowoomba half marathon. Jaime seeked regular treatment to get on top of this and her strengthening program was adjusted accordingly to assist in settling her symptoms.
One particular thing Jaime would change about her programming in the future is to design it around her menstrual cycle as she found her peak running weeks would line up with when her energy was lowest during her cycle (luteal phase). Whereas in the future she will plan to put her peak running weeks where her energy is the highest (follicular/ovulating phase). She is interested to see whether this makes a difference in how she manages her training load and how she feels throughout.

Jaime describes always dreading the morning of an event especially when it is cold, dark and typically a long wait. She particularly finds it hard to hype herself up for what’s to come when conditions are like this and on the day of the marathon it was enough for her to feel like she wanted to go home but once the starting signal went off this all melted away.
The body wasn’t feeling as fresh as she would have liked battling feelings of heaviness and soreness particularly in her back. Jaime attributes some of this to feeling exhausted from the build up to the event. She went in with a strategy to have no music up until 20km and use the race day energy to keep her going. At 27km she really started to hurt. Again those feelings of wanting to stop arose which made it a good time to call her partner for some words of encouragement. Many people state the marathon is more about the mind than the body. Jaime was an example of this, talking herself around to take the pressure off for the rest of the race and just enjoy the event. In the final 5km she was able to run with physio, Lleyton providing a great distraction from the pain and discomfort in that final push. Crossing the finishing line with a huge smile on her face, she celebrated with her loved ones completing the marathon in an impressive 4 hours and 45 minutes.
Since the completion of the marathon Jaime has enjoyed having flexibility and variety with her exercise without the regimented routine of marathon prep. While having a break from the strict programming for now and recovering from some foot and shin pain post event, Jaime has already locked in a half marathon in April 2026 but would really love at some point to have a crack at an Ultramarathon 100km. While she is unsure when this might be, it is definitely on her radar in the future. When you’re at PEAK make sure to give Jaime a big congratulations when you see her at the front desk. We are so proud of you Jaime!
