What is Osgood Schlatters?
Osgood Schlatter’s is an irritation of the tibial tuberosity at the front of the knee, which is where the patella tendon attaches to the shin bone. In adolescents, this area is particularly susceptible to irritation due to their ongoing growth.
Typically there will be no moment of injury, rather the pain is caused by repetitive strain of this location, most notably in sports that require a lot of running, jumping or kicking. Pain typically gets worse during sport and settles down with rest. Sometimes, a painful lump can be felt at the front of the knee.
How can Osgood Schlatters be managed?
Osgood Schlatters symptoms will typically resolve following the completion of a growth spurt, but before this occurs management is vital to help improve pain and ability to participate in sports.
Symptoms management may include:
Activity modification or rest to allow time for symptoms to settle
Ice therapy after activity
Gentle stretching and strengthening of the Quads and Hamstrings
Taping techniques to decrease loading
Correct Stretches for Osgood Schlatters
HAMSTRING STRETCH
