Overview

What is a Professional Bike Fit and Assessment?

During an assessment, our practitioners will consult with you to understand your concerns, goals and previous history to guide our assessment on how your body moves and whether there are restrictions or weaknesses preventing you from your optimal performance on the bike. We will then look at your bike, your position on the bike and then alter this to ensure your cycling position is efficient and risk of injury is reduced.

What Can A Professional Bike Fit and Assessment Help With?

Professional Bike Fitting and a Physiotherapy-led cycling assessment is a popular treatment option for cyclists at risk of a range of conditions. Some of the most common conditions we see amongst cyclists are; lower back pain, pins and needles in the arms and hands, hip, neck and knee pain.

Professional Bike Fit for Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is the most common condition seen in cyclists. This can be caused from a range of different issues such as; restricted hip mobility, weak abdominal muscles, and incorrect seat, stem and handlebar position. During an assessment your practitioner will assess potential issues contributing to your lower back pain on the bike.

Professional Bike Fit for Neck Pain

Neck pain is an annoying condition that can prevent cyclist from reaching their full potential. During an assessment we will determine whether your cycling position is contributing to this and/or whether there is tightness, weakness or restrictions in your body.

Professional Bike Fit for Knee Pain

If you experience knee pain while cycling, you are not alone, with this being the second most common injury experienced by cyclists. An assessment by your PEAK practitioner during your Bike Fit and Cycling Assessment will work towards minimising or eliminating this condition.

Benefits of Professional Bike Fitting & Correct Cycling Form

Having your bike fit at PEAK provides the added bonus of an allied health team that not only have a deep understanding of the biomechanics of the human body but is obsessed with helping you achieve your goals. A proper bike fit can contribute to improved efficiency, extended riding times, cycling harder, being more comfortable during your tough training sessions and improved performance in events and races. It could also prevent any overuse injuries that may develop from incorrect positions on the bike. There is no one “ideal” correct cycling position which is why we consider your goals, your background, how your body moves, your strength and flexibility and the bike you are riding.

What’s Involved In A Professional Bike Fitting and Cycling Assessment?

During your Bike Fit and Cycling Assessment your practitioner will consult with you to understand more about you and your personal goals and why you want a personalised bike fit.

Your PEAK practitioner will then perform a thorough assessment that examines areas such as, how your body moves and its composition, your flexibility, strength and control. This will help us determine what may need to be adjusted in your current bike set-up and whether there are things off the bike that you can be doing to move you closer to achieving your goals.

At PEAK we have a multidisciplinary team approach which provides a unique ability to approach your Bike Fit and Cycling Assessment with Physiotherapists, Chiropractors and Podiatrists all contributing to your cycling set up if required.

Following this, we will get you on your bike and review your cycling, taking measurements as we go and filming you to examine more closely the intricacies of your cycling technique.

If there are exercises or stretches to help you, we will also go through these with you and ensure you have access to these while at home.
