Across 2006–07, he took on a massive solo cycling journey. He rode 4,400km around the coastline of New Zealand and while he had the fitness base from riding everywhere day-to-day, he quickly learned that endurance alone wasn’t enough. He admitted feeling “woefully underprepared” having dismissed any structured strength training prior to the trip and developing knee pain within the first week, forcing him to scale things back. Thankfully, with youth on his side he bounced back quickly, but it was an important lesson in the value of preparation and injury prevention.
In the years since, he’s completed several incredible bikepacking trips, including Brisbane to Noosa with friends, Gympie to Brisbane solo, and more recently a nine-day New Zealand adventure in 2024. It was after returning from New Zealand this last time that his body started to protest again and the transition from long, hilly bike days back to sitting at a desk was a clear recipe for his lower back pain.

Ed’s wife encouraged him to see the team at PEAK back in May 2024. She had been to the clinic after a friend’s recommendation and didn’t hesitate to encourage him to book in once the pain started. He connected with one of our awesome physiotherapists, Lleyton, who quickly eased Ed out of his severe low back pain flare and helped him ignite a love for Nickelback. After re-aggravating his back with an almighty sneeze (a sudden movement in everyday life which has claimed many backs before), the value of shifting his mindset towards the prevention pathway instead of just managing unpredictable flares when they arose became obvious, and so Ed transitioned to PEAKs exercise-led prevention classes! He understood the benefits of strength training from his sporadic sessions over the years, but knew if he trained smarter and got stronger, then his biking adventures were more likely to go smoother.
The classes gave him confidence — not just in the gym, but in his body. Under Lleyton’s expert guidance on proper technique and progressive overload, he has almost doubled his barbell back squat from 45kg to 87.5kg. Ed says a year ago he would have written it off as a goal completely out of reach, but now has his eyes on the big 100kg milestone, with the confidence in himself and his physio, that he can get himself there. Lleyton believes that the real reason Ed keeps coming back to the sessions is the relentless Nickelback playlist making it onto the speakers each week, but that depends on who you ask.

The idea of running an ultramarathon wasn’t even on Ed’s radar until his mate Adam floated the idea of doing the UTA 50km trail run through the beautiful Keduma Valley in NSW. They’d run shorter distances together years ago & had shared plenty of adventures on bikes, but this was something else entirely. Ed was still experiencing major flares in his back pain at the time and couldn’t even walk more than a couple of kilometres without feeling sore. However, both Adam and Lleyton believed he could do it — and that was enough.
“I knew I had to be laser-focused with my training if I was going to get there. Now, I feel ready and strong. My goal is to have fun and finish without injury. While I don’t have a time goal I feel like I would be able to complete it in a respectable time for a first attempt at 50k.”
Throughout the training block, he’s stayed consistent with prevention classes and overall injury-free, albeit having lost a couple of toenails. Last week he hit his biggest week yet, with back to back half marathons clocking him in at over a 100km mileage week without issue — a huge accomplishment in itself.
When asked what he’d say to someone struggling with an injury or trying to maintain motivation during a big training goal, his response was grounded and encouraging:

For someone who once couldn’t walk without pain, to now feeling ready to run an ultramarathon through the mountains — this story is proof that big goals are built, not wished for. Results come from showing up, trusting the process and your mentors, and doing the little things right, again and again.
We can’t wait to see Ed smash his ultramarathon in a few weeks time and wish him all the best.
