Group kayaking in Antarctica among icebergs and cold ocean landscape

In the 3 months leading up to the trip, Karen committed to weekly kayaking lessons in Cleveland to build her confidence and skills on the water. Learning how to paddle efficiently and control the kayak meant she felt far more prepared for the conditions she would face in the remote Antarctic environment.

At the same time, she continued working on strengthening her core and shoulders through our exercise-led prevention classes at PEAK, which Karen has been attending for years to keep the pain associated with her shoulder tendonitis and bursitis at bay. During that time, she had worked hard to manage symptoms by leaning on members of the PEAK team for physiotherapy treatment and her classes for rehabilitation. She focused on kayaking-based exercises to gradually improve the strength and stability around the shoulder. Knowing that kayaking would place significant demands on her shoulders, she made it a priority to build strength and resilience before the trip. The aim wasn’t just to manage pain, it was to prepare her body so she could confidently take on the adventure ahead.

The Antarctic Experience

When the trip finally arrived, the preparation paid off!

During the kayaking excursion, they paddled through floating sea ice surrounded by towering icebergs and incredible wildlife. Penguins darted through the water beside the kayaks, elephant seals rested on nearby ice, and the Antarctic landscape stretched out in every direction.

“It was such a surreal, beautiful environment,” Karen said. “Like nowhere else on earth.”

For someone who had never set foot in a kayak before beginning her preparation, paddling through Antarctica felt like the ultimate reward. “It felt like the biggest adventure.”

Karen’s story is also a reminder that big goals are often built on years of small, consistent progress. Karen has been attending prevention classes weekly at PEAK since 2018, and during that time she has steadily built both strength and confidence. One of the things she values most about the classes is the accountability they provide and the opportunity to continually learn new skills. She loves that they can be individualised to any goal that you set for yourself.

“I enjoy having an exercise routine and learning to do new things to improve my performance,” she says. “It’s also a great way to manage injuries early and get a plan for resolving them.”

Over the years, Karen has progressed from simpler exercises using resistance bands and light hand weights to performing heavier strength exercises that she once never imagined doing. Today, deadlifts and back squats are a regular part of her training. She understands the benefit weight training can have on her bone density and muscle strength to help her stay active and fit to travel long into her retirement!

This kind of mindset progression is something we love seeing at PEAK. Often the biggest changes happen when people realise their bodies are capable of far more than they initially thought. That beyond pain there can be performance, with a prevention mindset.

Karen’s journey embodies PEAKs’ pain > prevention > performance framework fantastically.

Even after completing a once-in-a-lifetime Antarctic adventure, she’s already thinking about the next goal. After returning from a long holiday, Karen is focused on getting back into her exercise routine and continuing to build her lifting strength. With another birthday approaching, she has a fun challenge waiting for her. Her previous goal was to back squat her age plus 1kg, and with her next birthday around the corner, the target has just increased slightly. It’s a goal that perfectly reflects Karen’s approach to training: keep showing up, keep progressing, and keep challenging yourself.

Stronger for the Things That Matter Most

At PEAK Sports and Spine Centre, stories like Karen’s are exactly why we believe so strongly in the value of strength, preparation, and long-term exercise habits. The term ‘athletes’ is not just confined to marathon runners and prevention classes aren’t just about rehab or injury management. At PEAK, our classes are about helping people build the strength and confidence to keep doing the things that matter to them – whether that’s travelling, exploring new activities, lifting heavier weights, or simply staying active and independent as the years go on.

Karen’s journey is a great reminder that big adventures often start with small steps. A class, a new exercise, or the decision to try something different. And sometimes, those small steps can take you all the way to Antarctica!
