Eight years ago, Rossy endured a significant ankle injury that required surgery for an osteochondral lesion in his right ankle, along with achilles lengthening. The recovery process was long and grueling, taking a full nine months before he could start jogging again. This past experience became a crucial element of his marathon training. Rossy learned to be proactive in managing his ankle, ensuring he didn’t overload it during training and consistently incorporating preventative exercises. His journey exemplifies how setbacks can serve as stepping stones to greater achievements.
After his AFL career, Rossy sought a new challenge to keep him motivated and accountable in his fitness journey. He started by training for a 10km run, gradually building up to longer distances. This progressive approach not only helped him physically but also reignited his passion for sports. With each step, he was reminded of the joy that running brought him, making the marathon an exciting goal to strive for.

Completing the marathon was no small feat, and Rossy faced various challenges on race day. One of the most significant was managing cramps, particularly after crossing the 30km mark. Nutrition and hydration were also crucial considerations, as he navigated the demands of his body during the race. “The marathon itself was the biggest challenge,” he admitted. Past experiences had taught him that cramps often crept in at longer distances, so he knew preparation was essential.
Rossy’s approach to tackling these obstacles is one that resonates with many runners: “When you feel like you’re hitting a wall, remember to keep slowly ticking the legs over. You’d be surprised at the comeback you can make in just a few minutes.” This mindset not only helped him during the race but also serves as invaluable advice for others preparing for a marathon.
Completing Sydney marathon is just one step for Rossy. He has set his sights on tackling an international marathon in the future, with cities like New York, London, Boston, and Tokyo on his radar. The excitement of training for these iconic races keeps him motivated and eager to push his limits even further.
However, Rossy acknowledges the sacrifices that come with intense training. He looks forward to revisiting some of his old hobbies and sports, allowing for a more balanced approach to fitness and leisure.
Rossy’s journey from injury to marathon finisher is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. His story is one of determination, perseverance, and the importance of setting new goals. As he continues to share his experiences and insights, we can all learn from his path.
Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or just starting your fitness journey, there’s much to gain from Rossy’s inspiring story. Join us in celebrating his incredible achievement and the exciting road ahead!
