Bec first presented to PEAK in September of 2022 to address an injury with our podiatry team. However, little did we know Bec had endured a harrowing 9 months of battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma back in 2021. For those of you who don’t know, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that attacks the lymphatic system, leading to the body’s inability to fight off infection. As you can imagine, the symptoms following this diagnosis would have been far from music to the ears. Bec’s journey to recovery included six months of fortnightly chemotherapy and three months of recovery from chemo with the addition of IVF for fertility preservation. At the ripe age of 27, Bec has conquered a disease from hell. But not without obstacles.

When Bec first transitioned back into exercise it was difficult to accept that her level of conditioning was far from what she wanted it to be. Despite that deflated feeling, she jumped into a volume of running and strength training in an attempt to feel a little bit of her old self. As exciting as it was, the spike in load may have gotten the best of Bec. After consulting with PEAK’s podiatry team, we were quick to learn that despite Bec’s past, we had one motivated young athlete on our hands. She had already chosen her pain and completed the Bridge to Brisbane 10km before presenting with ankle and foot pain in September 2022. And she wasn’t stopping there. A half marathon was on the cards for Bec’s future goal and a tendinopathy wasn’t about to stand in the way of that.
After five months of rehabbing and targeted exercise prescription, not only was Bec increasing the running load, but a promotion at work and good news from the haematologist followed. The new year rolled around and Bec was gearing up for the Noosa half marathon in May 2023. With this goal in the works, Bec’s treatment plan included regular podiatry, physio and massage visits leading into race day.

Fast forward to late February, Bec started to run into some setbacks with her training. Running into problems with some lower back discomfort and an ankle sprain that lingered for months. The half marathon goal wasn’t looking promising for the end of May. However, giving up just wasn’t in Bec’s DNA. After a couple of months of de-loading, Bec went back to scratch…… once again. By August 2023, she was back up to 16km long runs and had set a monthly goal of 150km by the end of September as part of her training. Determined as ever, Bec is still currently plotting away at her goal of completing a half marathon and has sustained no further injuries for the last 8 months. Although she hasn’t yet ticked off the half marathon, she is still signed up to complete the Noosa half marathon and GC half marathon this year. Bec’s journey is nothing short of inspirational and we are very proud to have helped her on her return to running journey. We can’t wait to see you smash this goal out of the park in the near future!
