Podiatrists are trained to diagnose and treat a variety of foot and ankle conditions, including ingrown toenails. Conservative management options for ingrown toenails may include conservative removal of the offending nail spicule, advice on topical/ oral medications to reduce inflammation and infection, and padding or splinting to relieve pressure on the affected area. For patients who experience recurrent ingrown toenails, surgical management may be suggested under the guidance of your podiatrist.
In cases where conservative measures fail to provide relief or if the ingrown toenail is severe or recurrent, toenail surgery may be necessary. Surgery may be contraindicated for patients with underlying medical conditions that increase the risk of complications, such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease or neuropathy.
Toenail surgery, also known as a partial or total nail avulsion, involves the removal of a portion or the whole affected toenail to relieve pain and/or prevent recurrence. The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia in the podiatrist’s office and involves cutting away the ingrown portion of the nail. A chemical solution may also be applied to prevent regrowth. Patients can usually resume normal activities shortly after the procedure.
The intended benefits of the procedure will be individual to you (the patient) and should be discussed with your Podiatrist. Generally, benefits will be:
