What is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is a condition within the shoulder joint characterised by pain, stiffness, and a reduced range of motion. It typically develops gradually and progresses through three common stages: the freezing, the frozen, and the thawing stages. During the freezing stage, you may experience increasing pain and stiffness within your shoulder. The frozen stage is marked by persistent stiffness and limited mobility. Finally, during the thawing stage, you may gradually regain shoulder mobility over a period of months to years.

What causes Frozen Shoulder?

While the exact cause of frozen shoulder remains unclear, certain factors have been shown to increase your risk of developing this condition. These include age (typically between 40 and 60 years old), gender (more common in women), and underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disorders. Additionally, shoulder immobilisation due to injury, surgery, or other medical conditions can contribute to the development of frozen shoulder.

Recognising the Symptoms

If you’re experiencing persistent shoulder pain, stiffness, and difficulty with daily activities such as reaching overhead or behind your back, you may be dealing with frozen shoulder. It’s essential to seek professional help to receive an accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment plan.
