Something had to change.

Luke had recently set himself a goal of completing a triathlon in 2025, so the need to be able to move around freely and pain-free was necessary.

Luke worked with his PEAK physio to devise a plan to address this issue and ensure the back pain would not return :

Step 1:

Reduce pain and increase mobility

Step 2:

Strengthen, strengthen, strengthen!

Step 3:

Return to sport and higher level activities

Sounds pretty simple, although each step required commitment, hard work, and consistency.
With clear targets and goals in mind, it was time to begin.

The first step involved twice weekly one-to-one appointments to focus on hands on treatment. With this consistency, Luke was able to reduce the muscle spasming quickly and free up his back. This was accompanied by a graduated mobility program to be completed at home, to keep any stiffness at bay. It’s safe to say that Luke set himself up for success early on with his dedication to his end goal.

With his mobility back, it was time for step two – Luke swiftly moved into building up the muscles of his trunk. Luke decided to join PEAK’s Prevention Classes to keep himself on track. Starting with lower level exercises to work on stability such as planks, dead bugs, and rows. As these became easier and easier, Luke incorporated more arms and legs training to increase the challenge of his program.

Luke pushed more and more and naturally progressed into step 3 – higher level exercises. He had been so committed to his rehab until this point and so the transition to sports-related exercises was seamless. With the goal of avoiding back pain recurrence throughout return to surfing, AFL, and a triathlon in mind, Luke’s program morphed to suit the demands of each sport.

Now Luke is back surfing worry-free and starting his triathlon training, all whilst embracing the preventative mindset by continuing Prevention Classes and strength training.

Luke’s story started out like one that we have all heard before, but ended so tremendously due to his commitment, hard work, and consistency to his rehab. We applaud Luke for showing us that hard work pays off and look forward to seeing you accomplish your triathlon!
