How does the Anti Gravity Treadmill work?
The concept of the Anti Gravity Treadmill was developed by NASA as astronauts would need to engage in regular exercise to help with muscle and bone strength while away for long periods of time. The astronauts used an airtight chamber where air pressure was increased, pushing them down and simulating gravity in the process. On Earth, they created the concept of flipping the air pump, creating the opposite gravity effect – and the Anti Gravity Treadmill was created. This pressure can then be altered to reduce your body weight so you can exercise on as little as 20% to 90% of your body weight.
What are the benefits of using the Anti Gravity Treadmill?
Being able to decrease the amount of load that travels through the legs is very effective for returning to pain free running as soon as possible. This allows our patients to continue training whilst they follow through with their treatment and rehabilitation. Perfect if there’s an upcoming race or event with a tight timeframe!
What conditions is the Anti Gravity Treadmill used for?
Gradual return to running
Post knee pain, shin pain or foot pain
Bone stress injuries
Stress reactions and fractures of the feet, shins, thigh and hip
Post-surgery
Rehabilitation of ankle and knee injuries
Gait Retraining
For neurological patients

Example of an Athlete with knee pain
A middle aged lady recently presented to PEAK with anterior knee pain and has been unable to run for the last year due to pain levels. After starting a personal strength program and attending the Prevention Classes, she was introduced to the Anti Gravity Treadmill to begin a gradual loading program.
- Week 1 20 min treadmill run at 50% body weight
- Week 2 25 min treadmill run at 60% body weight
- Week 3 30 min treadmill run at 70% body weight
- Week 4 30 min treadmill run at 80% body weight
This incremental running program has helped gradually load the knee before eventually returning to outdoor running.
One of our coaches would be happy to provide you more information if the Anti Gravity Treadmill may be helpful for rehabbing your injuries! If you have any questions, give PEAK a call on (07) 3399 3318.
