Growth versus Age for Boys and Girls

Is it normal?

Yes. Often as a result of extra loads when performing activities such as running and jumping, pain can result. In most cases this does not mean damage. The growth plate is highly sensitive during peak periods of growth and this is generally a sign of irritation.

What can help to keep my child enjoying their physical activity?

Education

Seeing a physiotherapist to help explain that pain when growing is often a normal process can be helpful. It can assist in reassuring the young athlete that they do not need to be fearful of their pain.

Activity Modification

When pain is moderate to severe, having a relative rest can be helpful. If the young athlete is training and competing most days, it can be beneficial to incorporate some rest days into the week. Prioritising the most important events is helpful. Often symptoms can decrease substantially with some rest days.

Strength exercises

Strength exercises can help to increase the body’s resistance to the loads that are increasing pain. Often these can be performed pain free and can help to reassure the athlete that they can still stay active.

Coaches and parents have a vital role in using positive language during periods of growth. Young athletes are undergoing various psychological and physical changes during this period. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us on (07) 3399 3318.

If a young athlete is experiencing pain that is sudden and/or severe, seek advice from your medical practitioner.
