Katie was committed to returning to sport from day one post surgery with working with Aaron in prevention and 1 on 1 sessions to increase range of motion and strength. She was back running on the anti-gravity treadmill after 4 weeks and doing weights in the gym and bodyweight running on the treadmill after 9 weeks post surgery. Katie’s determination was one of the main drivers for her fast progression as she started training with her team twice a week for 6 months before returning to playing. These sessions were focused on her being comfortable completing football skills in different environments before putting them to use in a game.

Returning to playing soccer wasn’t the only goal Katie had, because she wanted to complete a half marathon at the gold coast running festival in July this year. This goal was a challenge for someone who had never done any long distance running events before. This goal helped Katie work towards something while being unable to play soccer. She was a regular participant in stride club and the PEAK long runs in the lead up to the event which set her up for success. Katie had the goal of not stopping the whole way and competing in the event in which she did with ease.
After Gold Coast Katie only had one goal left to complete return to playing football. Therefore Katie spent hours practicing landing, jumping, kicking on unstable surfaces and did force plate testing in preparation for playing. This moment came when she came off the bench in an U23 game nearly scoring with her first touch. The week later Katie was a substitute for the NPL women’s team in their semi final match. Katie was able to return to her previous level of sport in only 2 games and this is a testament to her commitment to her rehab. The 2023 season has some big things coming for Katie looking to cement a spot in the NPLW team and make a push for a grand final victory.
