Further benefits of Pregnancy Massage

  • Helpful in relieving joint pain and associated sciatic nerve pain
  • Provides an opportunity for women to stop and enjoy some time for themselves
  • Improves sleep quality and can increase energy levels
  • Improves mood and reduces anxiety
  • Aids in breathing

A variety of techniques can be used throughout treatment and you can expect a gentler massage depending on what stage of pregnancy you are at. It’s best to ensure that your massage therapist is qualified as they will need to be educated with common avoidance areas for trigger pointing and firm pressure. In addition, also knowing appropriate positioning for treatment is a high priority. Another perk to receiving massage throughout pregnancy is what you can learn about self massage during the process. If you find yourself struggling at home our massage coaches can prescribe some self massaging techniques that can be used to maintain the effects of treatment between visits!

You’ll often find a pregnancy massage to be well equipped with options such as specially designed pillows or a table to support the tummy and chest areas. The most common equipment will be the two different types of pregnancy pillows; either an adjustable pillow that allows you to lay on your front and has cut out cushioning for the breasts and tummy or a wedge pillow to support the tummy in the side lying position. The pregnancy tables are a little less common and are usually only seen in specialty clinics.

It would be worthwhile consulting with your doctor if you are unsure of any current or predisposing health issues prior to booking a massage. Alternatively, our Women’s Health Physios would be able to provide a suitable recommendation and communicate any health concerns with our massage coaches.
