Living with a chronic health condition often means adapting to unexpected changes. Allison Siddaway spent years managing the complex effects of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome mixed with a chronic neurological condition, including foot drop and severe joint pain. She worked closely with physical therapists, orthotists and surgeons to maintain her mobility.

Despite years of dedicated rehabilitation and multiple surgical procedures, her foot deformity continued to limit her daily life.

A decision to move forward

After careful consideration and endless research, Allison made the decision to undergo an elective below-knee amputation. She approached the procedure as a deliberate step toward regaining her independence. Following surgery, her rehabilitation required patience and daily work. She relearned how to balance, step, and build quad strength on her new limb.

Through this all, Allison maintained an uncompromising positivity which truly is inspiring and infectious to those around her. Allison placed a number of goals on the Dream Big Wall at PEAK, with the first being an unbroken 1km run, the second, a 5km run.

Turning goals into milestones

Her dedication reached a major milestone at the 2025 Sunshine Coast Marathon, where she completed the 5km event on her everyday prosthetic leg. The accomplishment reflected months of structured training in the gym and on the track. Her path has not been linear. She continues to navigate medical obstacles, including stump changes, osteomyelitis infections and neuroma pain.

Continuing to show up

Allison continues to show up every week, she never feels sorry for herself or lets her condition become an excuse. She is also willing to give anything a go – having done paralympic tryouts, wheelchair basketball and joining amputee groups. It’s an endearing quality within Allison which inspire us each time she walks into PEAK. Her experience shows how consistent effort and clear goals can help rebuild a life after major change.

What comes next

Allison’s journey is far from finished. As she continues to set new goals and take on new challenges, we’re incredibly proud to be part of her journey and can’t wait to see what she takes on next.
